The possibility that national expenditure in other directions would militate against Government grants for road works in the future, was suggested at a meeting of York City Council, last week, when the council decided to proceed with the construction of the projected ring-road around the city, at an estimated cost of 4534,000—an increase of nearly £200,000 on the original estimates. The Ministry of Transport's offer of a 60 per cent. grant was conditional on the work being put in hand without delay.
New Lancashire By-pass Opened.
Lord Derby officially opened, last Saturday, a £195,000 new road, which by-passes Formby (Lanc,$) and shortens the distance between Liverpool and Southport by three-quarters of a mile, removing 15 bends.
Two-plane Crack Detector.
The Magnaflux duplex crack detector, made by the Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd., 2 and 3, Norfolk Street, London, W.C.2, indicates the presence of cracks which run in two directions, in automobile and other parts. It can, for example, be used for examining drop arms which may be faulty in more than one plane. The test constitutes a magnetizing operation, first in one direction, then in another. The device should be a profitable one to all maintenance staffs.
LAISSER-FAIRE FOR G.W.R.
There were no objectors when the Great Western Railway Co. made application, recently, before the Western Licensing Authority, Mr. Trevor Morgan, for the renewal of licences in respect of 634 vehicles and 122 trailers. All were granted including the application for eight additional vehicles for Bristol.
Price of Sdbro Tipping Gear.
The price of the new Edbro tipping gear, described in the issue of The Commercial Motor dated December 9, has been provisionally fixed at £48, and not as originally stated. The gear is a product of Edwards Bros. (Tippers), Ltd., the premises of which are in Bradford Street, Bolton.
A New Wood-base Material.
Jicwood is the name of a new product of Jicvvood, Ltd., Weybridge, Surrey. Primarily developed for aircraft propellers, the " Samsonow " and " impregnated " types appear to have certain applications in the com mercial-motor industry. It has properties which, whilst resembling those of ordinary wood, are comparable with
