ROAD HAULIERS sending vehicles to Switzerland face a big increase in overheads as a result of plans to charge motorway tolls and levy a special charge on heavy lorries.
Both schemes have been agreed by Parliament and they must now be approved by the electorate at a referendum due to be held shortly.
The tax on lorries — Swiss and foreign — is proposed because of a hotly-disputed claim that they create more costs than are covered by the licence fee.
With the opening of the new Gotthard Tunnel, the volume of traffic on Swiss roads has greatly increased and the tax is designed to divert more goods to the railways.
If the scheme goes through, drivers of foreign lorries would have to pay the extra levy at the border.
