I READ WITH interest Brian Weatherley's editorial on bow driver training in Germany is often funded by insurers and trade bodies (CM2 March).
This issue has been around since driver training came into effect in the 1960s. Following the demise of the old RTITB grant scheme, the majority of training is now funded by private individuals.
Their main objective is to obtain an LGV licence at the lowest possible cost, resulting in newly qualified drivers lacking basic knowledge of tachographs etc.
With the advent of the new CPC for drivers, they will gain a great knowledge of road transport operations—but at a costi estimate that courses will be of three weeks' duration and will place an extra financial burden on the private individual.
