Liardet, revealing plans to change "institute" into "institution", said he had confessed to a senior lady politician ("but not the red-headed one") that he wasn't sure of the difference. She came smartly back: "That's easy; an institute has members, an institution has inmates!"

Opening the conference, Birmingham's Lord Mayor, Charles Simpson, raised a welltimed chuckle.
