COMING into operation this week are three sets of Regulations which refer principally to the motor vehicles type approval scheme and E marks. These are the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 1975 SI641 ; the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Amendment) Regulations 1975 SI462 and the Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regulations No SI635 all coming into operation on May 15.
Apart from a slight amendment to the definition of a dual-purpose vehicle— making the upper weight limit 2040kg — S1641 exempts certain vehicles and trailers from compliance with type-approval criteria.
The second set of Regulations adds certain interior fittings, devices to prevent unauthorised use, the behaviour of steering mechanism on impact, strength of seats and anchorages and internal projections to the type approval scheme and amends the directive about air pollution from spark ignition engines.
SI635 designates the approval marks to be used in connection with vehicles equipped with sparkignition engines and the emission of gas pollutants by that engine.
