• Meals served at motor way service stations have improved — but 42% are still classed as "appalling"; 32% as "acceptable", and 26% as "good", according to the latest Egon Ronay Guide. The last report, in 1981, described 75% of meals as appalling, and only 2% as good.
Of the 50 stations inspected, Membury on the M4 was judged the best with the Blue Boar at the Watford Gap as one to avoid. Trust House Forte was said to have the best food.
