.4-"IVE outsize E.R.E. vehicles have been put into use on internal transport in le Park Gate Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. lam at Rotherham, following a new per ational system recently inaugurated acre. The function of the heavy duty 7ansporters, each designed for a gross rain weight of 180 tons, is to move hot igots (at some 1,200° C) from the steellaking departments to the primary loom and billet mill, about a mile away isough still within the vast new £32m, tee works, which were opened recently. Each unit employs a six-wheeled allast box tractor with Rolls-Royce C6 NFR oil engine developing 200 b.h.p. at 2,100 r.p.m.; the tractor wheelbase is 14 ft. 6! in. The E.R,F, semi-forwardcontrol cab, constructed of alloy and plastics panels is used, behind it being the 9-ft. by 7-ft. 3-in. by 2-ft. steel container which is designed to carry up to 20 tons of ballast.
The gearbox is a David Brown 365, underdrive, three-speed, constant-mesh model with ratios of 2,56 : 1, 1-435 : 1 and 1: 1. The engines have heat exchangers and Series 10.000 CO torque converters, the torque multiplication being 1: 1 to 5 1. Kirkstall double-reduction hypoid bogies with third differential and a ratio of 10-18 : l are used. Fully laden, in underdrive gear, the outfit is designed for a maximum speed of 13-7 m.p.h. Each tractor tows two specially designed trailers made by Cranes (Dereharn) Lid.
Operating as part of the same scheme are two E.R.F. six-wheeled tippers, each haring a gross vehicle weight of 32 tons. In this case the engine is the 150 b.h.p. Gardner 6LX with a Series 10,000 CO torque converter built integrally. The gearbox is the David Brown 365 overdrive, whilst the rear bogie is the Kirkstall BG6 double-reduction type with 8-64: I ratio. The 20-cu.-yd. dumper has Edbro 6EW9 tipping gear.
