MP backs CV mechanics campaign
A LABOUR MP has backed a campaign to boost the number of HGV mechanics.
Joan Ryan, Labour MP for Enfield North, tells CM: -Demand for HGV mechanics is not going to go away. You can't move freight to high-street stores on rail: there will always be a demand for hauliers and. therefore. CV mechanics. too." Ryan believes businesses need to invest in apprentices to develop British employment. She adds: "We may have to bring in people from outside the UK for these jobs, and that seems crazy when we can invest in young people here."
Following a visit to north-east London-based vehicle repair group Hunter Vehicles to award a newly qualified HGV mechanic, Ryan says apprenticeship schemes should be praised and promoted.
In line with the Government's 2008 Education and Skills Bill, it is hoped that by 2020 about 190.000 people will complete apprenticeships each year.
Paul Blackman, director for Hunter Vehicles, claims once qualified, CV mechanics are sought after, but fewer people are attracted to the field.
In partnership with the Learning and Skills Council and North London Garage Group, Ryan presented 18-year-old Robert Skipp with his two-year NVQ Level 2 certificate in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
