THE SAD STORY last week about the German driver who crashed and killed himself because he was so tired is just the tip of the iceberg ('German truck driver's death probably due to tiredness', CM 9 October).
Most of us would not consider driving for 34 days without a day off, as he apparently did, but most of us know someone who would.
Hard economic times are not going to help either — the tighter things get, the more that companies are going to put 'efficiency' above safety and the more owner-drivers are going to push themselves to the wire in order to make a living.
The only way to discourage this is to make enforcement even tougher and give the consequences of sleepy driving as much publicity as possible.
So thanks for carrying the story, but I wish I didn't have to read it.
