LLEICESTER City Council was told last week of the "desperate straggle" to keep buses running to schedule because of increased traffic congestion in the city centre. Cllr. Sidney Bridges, chairman of the transport committee, reported that on certain routes vehicles were taking the equivalent of a third of the scheduled 'time in traffic hold-ups. Wet weather slowed down traffic by a further 20 per cent. He made a plea for industry to stagger its hours of workâparticularly now a 42-hour week was becoming more prevalent.
