• Leyland Daf will launch lowemission Euro-2 engines for its 65, 75, 85 and 95 trucks next month—two years ahead of the legal deadline—without using electronics.
The 11.6-litre WS engines will be fitted with the new Bosch P8.500 fuel pump which will deliver fuel to the injector nozzles at 1,200bar. The company's current Euro-1 engines use six-hole injectors with a total hole area of 0.48mm2. To produce the finer spray needed for better fuel/air mixing the Euro-2 engines use eight-hole injectors with a total hole area of 0.39mm2.
The higher injection pressures of the P8.500 pump are needed to ensure the same fuel delivery rate as in the Euro-1 engines.
Without electronics the cost of meeting the Euro-2 requirements is considerably reduced. Peter de Kok, head of engine development at Daf Trucks, says: "Unit injectors are not the only solution. The same result can be obtained with the new generation of fuel pumps combined with new, pre-pressed fuel pipes. Moreover, for the combustion process it is not important how fuel is pumped into the injector but how it gets into the combustion chamber."

The Euro-2 engines will be offered as an option which will carry a price premium of around £2,000 (ex-VAT).
Daf will unveil its new flagship tractive unit at the Amsterdam Motor Show in January. As reported (CM 22-28 July), the 95.500 will have a bigger version of the current 95 cab and will be powered by Cummins' 14-litre 373kW (500hp) Celect engine.
The company has no plans to replace the 60 Series (Freighter) 17-tonner with the 65. "On the contrary," says Leyland Daf managing director David Gill, "we have plans to develop the 60 Series, including Euro-2 engines." The 60 will be upgraded for continental markets with new models in the 11.0-170tonne GVW class, above the current 45 Series.
Daf Trucks marketing director Hans Staals confirms that the company has plans for a vehicle in the 12.0-15-tonne class.
