Two of Hardie's biggest sites. one in Knowsley and another in Wigan, are serviced by OSS. Paul Manning, director of the Merseyside Volvo dealer, says his company negotiates a package price for collections and this price is reviewed according to the levels of waste being generated.
"For example, at Wigan (our biggest site) we tip waste oil into a silo and throw old filters into bins that OSS supplies. It comes and empties them when they're full. The amount of waste is proportional to how busy we are."
Manning is resigned to the fact that waste disposal costs can only rise: "Once upon a time, we'd get paid for our waste oil, but government policy is to reduce waste and that means we as the waste producer will have to pay."
Hardie's Wigan depot has recently installed an oil-fired heating system by Econogen, which is designed to burn waste oils. "it could be that we eventually buy back refined oil from OSS to heat our premises". says Manning.
