• An inquest has heard that a West Cumbrian heavy goods driver died of multiple injuries after being crushed by a steel girder.
Robert Scott Bell, 64, of Maryport died at Workington's British Steel site last December after transporting two girders just 2.5km. He was employed by Alexander Boyes of Ireby, Cumbria at the time of the accident, which happened as the girders were being unloaded from his truck.
During the inquest into Bell's death, doubts were raised as to the stability of the girders: a jury of 11 heard that they were secured by a single strap before returning a verdict of accidental death. The Health and Safety Executive and British Steel have both launched investigations into the incident.
