3 hepstow RAC member Jonathan Cooke, en route to a showing of "Star Wars" with his girlfriend, had an unexpected close encounter with a thief and his dog. Things began to go wrong when he locked his keys inside his Vauxhall Astra and had to call out the RAC. While patrolman Dave Bennett worked on the lock, a sneak thief, accompanied by a mongrel dog, jumped into the patrol van and drove off. Public-spirited Jonathan gave chase, diving into the open passenger door,
whereupon he was dragged along for 500 yards, burning the rubber on his boots before being able to wrest control of the steering wheel and pull on the handbrake.
The sneak thief was in no mood to resist but his canine companion promptly bit 24year-old Jonathan on the leg.
Fortunately, the bite was not serious and the RAC was delighted with brave Jonathan's efforts—a fully kiited-out van costs £25,000. The motoring organisation has presented him with a cheque—and a new pair of boots.
