Driver claims he just 'forgot' to use tacho
A LANCASHIRE lorry driver, who claimed he "forgot" to use his "tachograph while driving on a journey, has had his LG V driving licence suspended for seven days.
Eric Thomason, of Westhaughton, had been called before Beverley Bell, the North Western Traffic Commissioner.
The TC said a traffic examiner had reported that in June 2006, a vehicle belonging to Kenny Skip Hire and driven by Thomason, had been stopped on Manchester Road, Little Hutton. Asked to produce his tachograph records. Thomason said he was not using one. He added he was only driving as a favour, and he must have forgotten to use the tachograph.
Speaking for Thomason, James Backhouse said he had his own two-vehicle 0-licence operating out of Kenny's yard. On 26 June, John Kenny had asked him for a favour by taking a vehicle to a tip 6.5 miles away. He forgot to put a chart in the tachograph on what was a short one-off journey.
Thomason said he must have been in a rush because the tip was scheduled to close.
The TC said she found it hard to believe Thomason forgot to use a chart because some things should just become second nature.
