Although not the CV Show's main attraction, a number of stands do represent the used vehicle market with many taking a sates approach.
Words: Kevin Swallow Traditionally, the used sector isn't overly subscribed when it comes to stands at the CV Show. Manufacturers of commercial vehicles put the weight of expectation on their current and new-launch vehicles, while finance houses and rental companies put their emphasis on how many pounds. shilling and pence a truck will cost you. On the whole, the used section is a bit of an afterthought, but those that do add used vehicles to their stands concentrate on moving metal.
A main player here has been the Mercedes-Benz team from Wentworth Park, Barnsley. The MB Approved Used Commercials division was the first to try taking a sales approach to the show, and has done so again this year.
It has had four pre-owned vehicles on their stand available for purchase, namely: Actros 2546 6x2 MegaSpace, Axor 2543 6x2 high-roof sleeper. Vito 115CDI Traveliner and Sprinter 315CDI long-wheelbase, high-roof van. The sales pay for the hall space and generate future business. In previous years, unique specifications such as the Predator have always tempted buyers as much as six months after the show.
Last year, MAN Truck & Bus UK successfully ran its own eBay-style auction for a MAN TGA 26.430, which fetched £40,100 [ex-VAT]. This year the manufacturer has returned with a newer, more stylish product. The TGA 18.480 Euro-4 is complete with the D26 engine and XXL cab. It has less than 30,000km on the clock, was registered in May 2007 and is under warranty until 2009. You have until 230pm today [Thursday] to make your bid on the MAN stand.
Live van sales
Manheim Auctions has been concentrating on its CV Live auctions, and will have covered several live van sales by the time you read this. Today [Thursday] it will broadcast the CV Live for Trucks from Leeds, so if you're after a truck, you can visit the stand to find out more.
Mark Mellor, managing director of The Truck Salesman, is a freelance truck procurement and disposal expert working directly for all sizes of fleets. The company's intention is to help operators realise the "true market value of their vehicles".
"We can offer operators the high resale values currently only achieved by the biggest fleets, such as Maritime or Stobart Group, and dedicated personnel to dispose of their used vehicles and equipment," he says. "Operators can enjoy the benefits of having their own truck salesman without the overheads of employing a dedicated salesperson.
"Price pressures within the used market mean operators end up footing the bill for end-of-contract return conditions and the profit margins of dealerships and manufacturers," says Mellor.
"Trucks are the best and most valuable asset most transport operations have," says Mellor. "It is essential they continue making you money even once you have taken them off the road." •
