II A pay increase of more than 15% is being hailed as a benchmark for all truck drivers in the run-up to the 411-hour working week.
Wages of more than 40 drivers working for 'MG contracted to retailer Hatfords have risen by nearly 11./hr to £1.25.
Bob Shaw, regional industrial officer for the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G), says it is the biggest increase he has negotiated for drivers this year even though the deal covers 15 months instead of the norma112.
"We're now looking for pay increases of this level across the industry so that earning levels can be maintained when the shorter working week comes in."
He adds that the drivers, who are based in Redditch, won the rise after Hailer& acknowledged the danger posed by growing driver short ages once the WTD comes into force in 2005.
Earlier this month, the T&G repeated its call for a £10/1r minimum wage for all drivers (CM10-16 July). "With pragmatism and sensible bargaining, we can use deals like this as stepping shines," says Shaw.
A TDG spokeswoman says that although there are no conditions attached, there is an agreement to make shift patterns more efficient.
