WHAT is probably the most imTV portant alternative-fuel trial yet held is to take place from June 25 to July 16 next, under the joint auspices of the Royal Automobile Club of Italy and the French Automobile Club.
The rally, which is open to both commercial and private vehicles, will consist of a journey from Rome to Paris, via Florence, Venice, Milan, Turin, Grenoble, Lyons, Belfort, Luxembourg, Brussels and Rouen, the total distance being nearly 1,720 miles.
The fuels used may consist of gas produced from wood or charcoal, methane or other Os, shale or lignite spirit, benzole, synthetic spirit, alcohol, etc. The form of fuel adopted must, however, be used throughout the journey, which will be completed in daily stages at a speed not exceeding the maximum allowed in each country through which the vehicles pass. During the rally, tests of fuel and lubricating-oil consumption are to be carried out.
There are classes for (a) buses and coaches seating 12-18 persons, and light vans and lorries, with engines up to 6-litre capacity, and a total laden weight not exceeding 61 metric tons; (b) heavy buses and lorries without limit to engine capacity or weight; and (c) public-utility vehicles, without limit to engine capacity, but with weight restricted to that permitted in the countries passed through.
Records will be made of the time B38 occupied in starting engine, the cause' and duration of stoppages on the road, the time occupied in effecting adjustments, keeping the vehicles in running order, etc.

obtained from the Bureau of the Commission Technique of the French Automobile Club, Place de la Concorde, Paris, to which entries, at the rate of 100 fr. per vehicle, must be sent before June 8 next.
