Oo Monday, British' Road Services will raise their rates to cover
increased costs of wages, fuel, tyres and other items. They aim to secure an overall increase of about 71 per cent. on the revenue earned before December 6 last Advances in rates will be higher for smaller consignments, in which category the effect of rising costs is more pronounced, than for larger lots.
The 21 pr cent surcharge which has been in force since April 15, pending the settlement of wages negotiations, will be discontinued on Monday.
.B.R.S. state that no general increase has been applied to their charges covering 'general haulage since December, 1952. In the intervening four years heavy advances in costs have, they say, been largely absorbed.
The national rates committee of the Road Haulage Association met yesterday to consider the amount by which rates should be raised to offset higher costs. When The Commercial Motor closed for press, an increase of 5-74 per cent. was considered likely to be proposed.
