EXPERT opinion that at f20m.the cost of a new tunnel under the River Mersey to connect Liverpool with Birkenhead is prohibitive, has been cited by Ald. J. Braddock, leader of Liverpool City Council, who is contending that the project would not be worth the expenditure.
He points out that as it would take 8-10 years to build, the cost could reasonably be expected to rise to about £25m. Work is to start soon on re-surfacing the whole length of the present Mersey Tunnel,
TAX INSPECTORS INQUIRE ABOUT TIPS
CERTA1N Inland Revenue authOrities are asking passenger-vehicle undertakings to provide lists of their drivers and staff, with the total amounts earned by them including tips, state the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association.
The P.V.O.A. advise members that under existing law they must produce on request to the Commissioners of Inland -Revenue for inspection wages sheets, tax-deduction cards and other documents, but cannot give details about tips when they have no official information.
It is felt that the Inland Revenue authorities are exceeding their responsibilities in seeking this information.

Aid. Kelly was chairman of Stockton Transport Committee.
Mr. Pass was managing director of J. Pass and Son, Ltd-, Old Whittington, Chesterfield. Until 1953 he was Chesterfield area manager of British Road Services.
