Tractor-trailer Braking System
ATRACTOR-TRAILER braking system that can apply either all brakes or only those of the trailer is shown in patent No. 914,653. The latter condition is intended for gentle braking on a slight downgrade. The scheme is not limited to trailer combinations; it can also he applied to a normal vehicle, braking on the rear wheels only in the foregoing circumstances. (Clayton Dewandre Co. Ltd.. Titanic Works, Lincoln.)
The drawing shows the general layout in which the master cylinder (1) operates the brakes of the tractor (not shown). It
also works a valve unit (2) which controls a vacuum cylinder (3) mounted on the trailer and powered from a vacuum reservoir (4). The vacuum cylinder moves the trailer brakes via a hydraulic system (5).
The pedal works all the brakes but if the trailer only is to be braked, a hand lever (6) is used. This works the control valve via a Bowden cable (7).
The specification gives also two detail drawings of the interior construction of the control valve.
