T" European Conference of Ministers of Transport (E.C.M.T.), in its recently published ninth annual report covering 1962, announced that the number of motor vehicles in member countries continued to rise at least as fast as in previous years (average annual increase was 12.7 per cent for the period 1950-62). in nearly all countries there was a heavy increase in goods transport
by road, more so for international traffic.
During the year 514 km_ (330 miles) of new European motorways were, opened and 325 km. (200 miles) of older-type motorways were modernized.
