THE Ministry of Transport is being asked by the Traders Road Transport Association not to make indiscriminate or unnecessary use of a regulation which will make it an offence—counting towards disqualification of a driving licence—for a driver to cross a double white line. The request has been made against the background that in some cases it is either permissible or necessary to cross double white lines.
The Association also seeks to clarify the wording which authorizes a driver
to cross double lines " owing to circumstances beyond his control or in order to avoid an accident."
The maximum width of ordinary commercial vehicles can be up to 7 ft. 6 in. with one foot overhanging each side—a total of 9 ft. 6 in. In a narrow road, with a double white line down the centre, a driver might, says the T.R.T.A., have to be in a position, especially when negotiating a bend or a bridge, when either his load or his vehicle was over the lines.
