• Sunderland Corporation is to object to any move by the Government to include the Corporation's bus undertaking in the proposed PTA for Tyneside. The Ministry is asking local authorities in the area for their views on extending the proposed Tyneside PTA to include Sunderland, but Sunderland Corporation says it does not consider Sunderland as part of Tyneside.
It would be more natural to have a PTA for Wearside, but the Corporation would be against this also. Aid. Spain, chairman of Sunderland transport committee, said that if the undertaking was included, it would be taken over without compensation. This would be seizing ratepayers' assets.
Although Sunderland's bus service had a large deficit, it was not bankrupt, and it should be left to work out its own salvation. Cllr. N. Trotter, chairman of Newcastle transport committee, has stated that Newcastle did not object to the proposed Tyneside PTA, but he thought Newcastle Corporation should continue to control its buses, as agent to the PTA.
