• An American firm of transport and planning consultants is to carry out a survey of transport in the Tyne and Wear areas, on behalf of a joint committee representing local authorities, the County Councils of Northumberland and Durham, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Housing and Newcastle University.
The survey will take about four years, and will determine whether more people can be encouraged to use public transport, and also examine transport methods and coordination. Half the cost of the survey will be borne by the Ministries of Transport and Housing.
