Thumbing old copies of CM it is often difficult to pinpoint just when the many trends in the expansion of road transport actually started. Often there have been trial runs after which some fell by the wayside while others were obviously destined to stay. Indeed, for commercial purposes, it could be said that when such runs become commonplace the trend is well and truly established.
Colleague Sam Buckley got that impression about household removals by roll-on/ roll-off service to Europe in talking to Fred Hoult of Newcastle at the Removers Conference last week at Leicester. In co-operation with John McIntosh and Son Ltd., Fred told him that the previous week they had just completed a household removal for Jackie Stewart, the racing driver, from Helensburgh, Scotland, to Geneva, Switzerland. As they were running in a new Bedford tractive unit coupled to a 2,500 cu.ft. York Freightmaster they took the relatively leisurely time of Wednesday to the following Tuesday to complete the job. With trophies and all included the load was insured for £10,000. But just another Continental job for Hoults.
