IF a vehicle breaks down on a motorway it is natural for the driver to try to coast as far as possible before pulling on to the hard shoulder. To do so may, however, be inviting death.
According to Eric Charles, chief executive of RAC Motoring Services, a survey of mysterious accidents to people on the hard shoulder on a section of M1 showed that most of them occurred at the bottom of gradients down which drivers had coasted. It was there that speeds were highest.
Presumably anyone attending a breakdown at these points runs a greater risk of being sucked under a passing vehicle or at least of being blown off balance and into the carriageway. Eric's advice is: Always pull on to the hard shoulder at the top of an incline.
