Imust respond to Nigel Cole's letter in the 3-9 November 1994 issue of Commercial Motor.
In 1988, when the introduction of side marker lights to LGVs and their trailers was being proposed, the Road Haulage Association, with other trade associations, called for the introduction of reflective side markers instead. We pointed out that reflective side markers were cheap and easily maintained and would not be affected by bulb failures, as in the case of side marker lights.
We find it difficult now to support the proposal to introduce reflective side markers without any evidence to show what has changed since 1988, when we were told that reflectors were not the answer to this problem and side marker lamps would become mandatory. I can assure Nigel Cole that the haulage industry was far from silent in 1988, but despite our protests, we were over-ruled by the Department of Transport.
