NBC chairman Freddie Wood, on the same occasion, was right to urge local
authorities to put their heads together with the bus companies, because there are several ways of tackling the problem of marginal services and Bedfordshire has been one of the better examples of how to go about it. Nevertheless, I can understand it when the NBC gets a bit frustrated ; after all, the revenue support grants amounted to only £.2.8m of NBC revenue last year —the drop in a bucket which totalled £220m, and was still not enough.
Neither here nor in the urban areas, though, is the boot entirely on one foot. I'm sure there's a lot of re-organisation still to be done —and at the Luton opening it was shown how a re-organisation involving redeployment of staff and a rationalising of vehicles and routes had already brought an improvement in Luton bus services, and more passengers. If only operators could now get the spares and the new vehicles, I guess we might see some dramatic improvements in a number of areas.
