article I on the landfill tax by Derren Hayes (CM 1 0-1 6 October).
It is not surprising that after only a week in operation the first reports of massive job cuts, work drying up and vehicles standing idle are beginning to come through.
The tax, while noble in its aim of trying to tax those who create more waste, was bound to hit waste hauliers. Costs, which have doubled overnight, will have to be passed on to the customer, and those that don't will either be running at a loss or
finding other ways to dispose of waste! Many contracts were rushed through before the tax came in so there is little work now and the tax also encourages recycling which means there will be less waste to move in the future.
This tax will carry on costing drivers their jobs and operators their livelihoods and it k a shame but not surprising the industry didn't make the Government aware of the effects it is having.
The Landfill Tax is rubbish and it's time someone put the lid on it Name and address supplied.
