This was revealed in the Annual Report for the Traffic Commissioners for 1991-2. It recorded a significant rise in the number of prohibitions for PCVs which were immediately dangerous. And prosecutions for drivers' hours infringements more than doubled on the previous year's figures.
The Scottish area had the worst record with immediate prohibitions representing 9.6% of the total. The North Western recorded 9.5% and the South East/Metropolitan 8.6%. The national average was 7.1%.
Eastern Traffic Commissioner Brigadier Compton Boyd said in the report: "It would be surprising if the present economic climate is not in part responsible for lower standards of maintenance." Western Traffic Commissioner Air Vice Marshal Ronald Ashford said the percentage of prohibitions in his area was 13.8% — half of those were immediate. "This data confirms my suspicion that there are many operators in the Western Traffic Area which are barely surviving," said Ashford. / The first of five Endurance Citybus bodies, built by Robert Wright of Ballymena, Northern Ireland, was handed over to Yorkshire Traction last Friday (11 September).
