ALTHOUGH Sweden's geographical position may have heightened its sensitivity to danger, its lorry drivers are as reluctant as their British colleagues to wear seat belts. But investigations by Volvo have shown that in three out of four truck accidents in which the driver was seriously hurt, the use of a three-point seat belt would have lessened the injury.
The Volvo lorries sold in the UK will soon have seat-belt anchorage points at no extra cost, so perhaps operators will be encouraged to order belts to go with them.
Another way in which lorry drivers invite injury is by carrying loose gear in the cab. Anyone who saw what happened to it in a Volvo film of a simulated crash at 30mph would never leave even a cigarette packet lying about.
