1/ The new Greater Glasgow Passenger 'ransport Authority comes into operation a October 1. This is the effect of the ireater Glasgow Passenger Transport Area Designation) Order 1972 contained in hatutory Instruments 1972 No 1094(S77) mblished last week.
The contents and wording of the Order nade by the Secretary of State for Scotland
m July 21 and laid before Parliament on .uly 31 are similar to those of the Orders Or the establishment of the four other PTAs
n February 1969.
The area covered by the new PTA will be is follows:—
The County of the City of Glasgow; the mrghs of Paisley, Motherwell and Wishaw, 2,oatbridge, Airdrie, Clydebank, East Ki!bride, Hamilton and Rutherglen; parts of Bishopsbriggs and the County of Lanark; .he burghs of Johnstone, Renfrew and Barrhead and part of the County of Renfrew; the burghs of Bearsden, Kirkintilloch, Cumbernauld and Milngavie and part of the County of Dunbarton; the burgh of Kilsyth and parts of the County of Stirling.
A total of 26 members will be appointed to the Authority by the Constituent councils, Glasgow Corporation being entitled to appoint 13 members, Lanark County Council three and the remaining councils one each. In addition, in accordance with paragraph 1 of Part I of Schedule 5 of the Transport Act 1968, and in common with the other PTA Orders, the Secretary of State will appoint "such number of members not exceeding one sixth of the aggregate number" appointed by the constituent councils. These members will have special knowledge or experience which will be of value to the Authority.
The new Passenger Transport Authority area covers the operating territory of Glasgow Corporation Transport — but more than half the area is the territory of Scottish Bus Group companies Western SMT, Central SMT and Eastern Scottish.
