BELGIAN legislators are soon to discuss a motion which proposes that all heavy motor vehicles, trucks and buses be fitted with radio receivers. The new rule would require vehicles registered after January 1980 to have equipment which would allow drivers to receive traffic warnings and weather bulletins so that they can plan ahead and avoid areas likely to be congested.
A more controversial proposal may follow a recent statement by the Belgian minister of public works who, having based a new road wear study on US findings, is asking for a reduction of axle weights to 10 tonnes. Belgium, with France and Luxembourg, at present permits 13-tonne axles on commercial vehicles.
