THE PROPOSAL put forward by the Lib Dems for a restriction on the amount of fuel carried on trucks while in transit through the Eurotunnel makes sense.
Health and safety must be the priority here, and then, of course. the issue of competiveness for the UK operator.
We've now had three fires in the Channel Tunnel, and, luckily, up to now, no-one has been killed. Next time, we might not be so lucky.
Foreign trucks carry about 1,500 litres, while some carry more, and the cost of this fuel is around 25ppl cheaper when bought on the Continent. Restrict the amount of fuel being brought into the UK, and operators can be competitive in their own country.
