IF DRIVERS of large and slow vehicles on single carriageway roads do not pull in to allow others to pass, they may be forced to do so by law.
Lord John-Mackie warned in the House of Lords last week that if there is no improvement over the next three years he would try to introduce suitable legislation, but withdrew an amendment to the Transport Bill which would have compelled drivers of slow vehicles with a minimum of five others behind them to pull in as soon as possible or stop.
Under-secretary for the Environment Lord Bellwin however said he could not accept the solution offered. He thought they would give rise to so many difficulties of interpretation for drivers and police that there would be as many problems created as solved.
