THE Conference of the Institute of Public Cleansing, which opened in Margate on Monday and closes to-day. marked the 50th anniversary of that body's foundation. In the absence of the president, Mr. H. Ardern, M.B.E., A,M.I.Mech.E., at present convalescing after a long illness, the chair was taken by Mr. J. C. Dawes, C.B.E,, M.I.Mech.E.
SEVERAL interesting papers were read during the week and on Wednesday an open forum was held for the general discussion of matters within • the scope of the conference. ibis was followed, on Thursday morning. by an inspection of vehicles and appliances, and in • the afternoon, vehicles were shown in action.

Misselbrook, B.A., director of the Unit of Social and Industrial Psychology, 'Edinburgh University, on Human Engineering "; Coon, • Donald Kaberry. deputy chairman of Leeds Cleansing Committee. on " A Layman Looks at Public Cleansing "; Mr. J. H. Cowan. deputy director of public cleansing. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on "Snow Clearance "; Mr. J. Forton, cleansing
superintendent. Reigate, on "Problems and Methods of Refuse Collec
tion," and Mr. Colin Clegg. director of public cleansing. Southend-on-Sea, on " Refuse Disposal—Present-day Problems."
DISCUSSIONS on the papers and the demonstration of vehicles will be reported in next week's issue.
