SIX Government officials from Finland arrived in London last week-end for a two-day visit as guests of A.E.C., Ltd., and Simms Motor Units, Ltd.

The party comprised: Mr. Klaus Hakkanen, permanent secretary-general in the Ministry of Communications and Public Works; Mr. Uno Havu, chief of department in the Ministry of Financial Affairs; Mr. Eska Katajarinne, chief of department in the Ministry of Defence; Mr. Kalle Tolonen, director of the Government roadbuilding department; Mr. Alfred Helio, director of the Post Office; and Mr. Vilho Koivisto, managing director of Pohjolan Liikenne Oy. Bus and Trucking Co., owned by the State Railways.

A few hours before the party returned, they were joined by more than 50 transport operators from Finland. They were spending four days in this country also at the invitation of A.E.C. and Simms.

CAB DOOR TOUCHED SOCKET: MECHANIC DIES

A MECHANIC died of electric shod( fA when he touched a lorry's metal cab, because the door was touching a lamp socket.

This was found at an inquest at Leicester, last week, when a verdict of accidental death was returned on the mechanic. He had gone to help the driver, who was also shocked.

The switch to the socket was stated to have been off, and that the wiring at the garage of Spencer's Haulage Contractors, Ltd., Barkby Road, Leicester, had been altered two years ago.

Mr. Leslie Hopkins, a director, said that he replaced a length of wire to the socket about six months ago.

SHELL-MEX ORDER 75 ALBIONS

ACONTRACT worth over £280,000 has been placed with Albion Motors, Ltd., Glasgow, by Shell-Mex and B.F., Ltd., for 75 Caledonian eight-wheeled chassis. These are to be fitted with 4,000-gal. aluminium tanks by Alfred Miles, Ltd., Gloucester.

The front bogies will be set back to allow the use of cabs with entrance steps ahead of the front wheels. The cabs are to be built by the Duramin Engineering Co., Ltd. Leyland 0.600 125 b.h.p. oil engines power the chassis, and the doubledrive rear bogies incorporate lockable third differentials.

Power-assisted steering has been specified.

FIRST CHIEFTAIN SALE IN U.S.

AN Albion Chieftain 7-tonner is the first vehicle made by the Leyland group to be delivered to• a North American operator since the formation of Leyland Motors (U.S.A.), Inc. It has joined a fleet of 1,000 vehicles operated by Yale Express Systems, Inc., New York, who state that it was purchased because there are no competitive American-built oil-engined vehicles in the Chieftain's weight range.
