• The United Road Transport Union is to mediate in a rate-cutting dispute between Archbold and 40 owner-drivers sub-contracted on the company's Magnet Joinery contract.
Archbold Freightage management will be contacted by the union this week to discuss complaints that the owner-drivers have been forced to accept a 10% cut in rates. The drivers, who work out of Archbold's Keighley depot, held a meeting at the weekend to discuss the issue and asked URTU to attend.
The owner-drivers say Archbold cut the 10% mileage payment, which is paid on top of their 66.9p/mile basic pay, from mid-January without notice.
Archbold Freightage managing director Brian Cresswell says he needs to support customers through the recession.
"Most owner-drivers have given their backing to this move," he says. "The company has discussed with every ownerdriver concerned at the Keighley depot the need to support customers, which has meant adjusting our charges and therefore drivers' payment."
