uninvited visitors to a trailer, whether thieves, stowaways or worse, are still a major nuisance.
Ulster engineer Martin McErlean of Magherafelt has devised a cost-effective solution for operators of box trailers: a sturdy locking bar mounted beneath the rear doors which pivots against the door catches to stop them being opened.
The system is activated automatically when the trailer parking brake is released and unlocked when it is re-applied. For rigid vehicles or for additional control a simple in-cab operated solenoid system can be added.
McErlean's system costs 2350 including fitting; Dublin-based operator Caffrey International has already equipped 32 of its trailers.
