Barry Travis, editor of the Heavy Commercial edition of The Red Book, says: The cab has become dated and its time that Volvo consdered a change but we don't know of any plans to do so. The position of the FL6 weakened in the market place towards the end of its run. The 5.5-litre engine could be a bit bigger, especially for the heavier end of the FL Light range. In the used market Volvo's 18-tanner doesn't command the best prices.
'New FLs are mostly obtained by the ownaccount sector but they haven't proved popular with the big fleets. At 7.5 tonnes a downrated Volvo hardly registers at all in the market. At 12 tonnes
the FL does just slightly better and it only at 15 tonnes that it starts to make significant inroads. The 180hp engine has been the more popular choice of power but in the second-hand market 220hp is what's wanted at 18 tonnes even that amount or power is considered a bit too low.
The 12/15-tonne market has not grown as expected over the past few years and remains a niche market for companies like Volvo. At this weight there is a predominance of box bodies but the used truck buyers want ourtainsiders. A 12-tonne FL with a box with a 2000 V-registration commands a trade price of about £7.500 and retails for £10,250. Expect to pay 6% more for a curtain, 25% more for a fridge and about 6% less for a flat."
