UP-10 50 I Janson subcontractors in south Wales have returned to work after the aggregates company agreed to review the reduced pay rates it imposed earlier this month.
Drivers staged a mass walkout after the company slashed rates on load and mileage (CM 4 March). Hanson even terminated six subbies' contracts after they refused to work on the reduced salary. But a crisis was averted after the company's UK managing director, Mike Ogden, met the drivers and promised to review the pay rates. He also reinstated the six drivers.
"He was a reasonable fellow [but] he told us that's the price, like it or lump it," says one driver. "If we are working we can live to fight another day, though he gave us his word he would look fat the rates] at the end of the month."
