T'THREE blows struck by nationalization don were mentioned by Mr E. I. Shaw, M.Inst.T., chairman of Direct Motor Services (Sheffield), Ltd., at the company's annual meeting in Sheffield.
First, "there was the loss of old shareholders, who both gave and accepted our work," he said. "Secondly, the British Transport Commission has practically severed all trading relations with other carriers. Finally, the reduction of radius for the independent hauliers has meant the loss. of further members, and, obviously, a diminution in the facilities we can offer to the public."
So far, however, the company had more than held its own and fully employed 300 lorries. It was formed 28 years ago to link traders needing transport and hauliers needing loads. The directors, said Mr. Shaw, had resisted the temptation to make large profits at the expense of the small haulier.
The trading account showed record profits, yet they were only just over 2 per cent, of turnover.
DRAWING COMPETITION PRIZES
DRIZES have been awarded in the I 1951 drawing and handicaft competition organized by the institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers and other organizations.
First prize in the section for a design of an underfloor-engined luxury coach body went to Mr. S. W. Peck, Sutton Coldfield, who received £75. The second prize of £37 10s. was awarded tci Mr. C. P. Stephenson, and Mr. F J. C. Hollyman received the third prize' of £15. All received the medal of the Worshipful Company of Coach and Coach Harness Makers.
Mr, B. J. Garner, Stanmore, received the £50 award for the best mobile-shop design.
THREE PASSENGERS PER BUS
LAST summer an average of only three persons travelled on each bus on the Corbridge-Gilsland service of the United Automobile Services, Ltd. The company gave this information to a deputation from Haltwhistle Rural District Council which pressed for a restoration of the service. There had been a loss of DINO on the NewcastleCarlisle service, it was stated, between £200 and £300 of which was incurred on the Haltwhistle section of the route.
