The Department of Transport is considering abolishing Condition 5 of the London Lorry Ban along with other proposals in a bid to make routeing easier for hauliers.

The Freight Transport Association has been pressing for the DOT to drop Condition 5 which requests drivers who hold London lorry ban exemption permits to minimise their use of restricted roads. The DOT is believed to be considering switching more London roads to Government control, from local authorities, which would, in effect, remove some routes from the ban.

The London Boroughs Transport Committee says 520 transport company convictions have been secured on Condition 5 since the London lorry ban was introduced in 1986: 590 are pending prosecution.
