MORE THAN £500,000 worth of property has been recovered and 20 people arrested since the launch of a police squad dedicated to cutting truck crime in the West Midlands.
Speaking at the Road Haulage Association's security seminar, Driving Down Freight Crime, DCI Carl Foulkes from Operation Indicate said: "There has been a fall in truck crime since the team of 10 was set up last June.
"We have also found that those involved in the original truck crime have links to other crimes such as drugs, firearms and people smuggling. Having a team of dedicated officers means we can carry out further targeted operations on those committing offences, which is helped further by an increase in liaison between police forces." Simon Coniston from Wolverhampton-based Coniston Freight, which had a truck hijacked with a £170,000 load of nickel, agrees that the police do seem to be taking truck crime more seriously in the region."flowever," he adds, "they still need to liaise more with the victims so we know how the investigation is progressing. We would also like them to offer us advice about things we can do to safeguard against this happening again."
Operation Indicate, based at Wednesbury police station in the Black Country, was set up following widespread criticism of the force's response to truck crime and the closure of its predecessor. Operation Coppergold.
