SOURCES WITHIN Daf have revealed exclusively to CM that Eaton is on the verge of entering the European light truck sector with a new automatic transmission to rival that offered by ZF.
ZF has had the bespoke transmission market virtually to itself in the past, with its five-speed S5-42 box becoming the industry standard in the 7.5-tonne sector.
However, with a shift toward automated mechanical transmissions in the light sector, Eaton appears to be preparing market entry and Daf insiders say the Manchester-built product is definitely a contender for the business.
Allison is also understood lobe vying for work with its 1000 Series fully automated gearbox.
Eaton launched the new UltraShift six-speeder in the US this spring, following hot on the heels of ZF's unveiling of its lightweight auto last summer.
Eaton's version employs the FS° Series six-speed manual transmission as its base hardware. though with the synchronisers removed. An ECU allows communication between engine and gearbox, while clutch is `electrohydraulically' actuated.
• Daf is reporting strong uptake of heavy trucks equipped with the ZF AS-Tronic transmission. Currently the take-up is virtually 20% and growing, according to a spokesman, although this is behind the take-up in Holland where the percentage of tractors sold with AS-Tronic is 60%.
