Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Despite selling 40 per cent fewer trucks in the UK last year than in 1984 Foden Trucks is understood to have made a trading profit in 1985.

The exact amount is unlikely to be revealed, as it is hidden in the figures of its American parent company, Paccar, which gives no details of individual operating firms. Last year, Foden sold only 450 vehicles to UK operators, against 745 in 1984.

Paccar, which builds Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks in the US, achieved a net income of $72.9 million (£50 million) in 1985 on worldwide sales of $1.9 bn (£1.31 bn).

It reports that in addition to growth in its markets of Australia, Mexico and Canada it is also seeing sales increases in Sweden, Chile and China.

Paccar currently holds second place in the US Class eight (heavy tractive unit) market.
