IVECO GAVE ITS first Euro-6 engine a public debut in Amsterdam. With a swept volume of 11.1 litres, the Cursor 11 will succeed the 10.3litre Cursor 10. The increase in displacement means rated engine speed is cut from 2,100rpm to 1,900rpm, while the maximum power rating goes up from a nominal 460hp to 480hp, with peak torque of 2,250Nm at 1,050rpm.
Unit injectors used in the current Cursor engines are replaced by common-rail fuel injection. Variable geometry turbocharging is used on the 460hp and 480hp ratings; a waste-gated turbo suffices on the 420hp Cursor 11. The real novelty is Iveco’s rejection of EGR at Euro-6, claiming that its unique SCR-only NOx reduction strategy will pay dividends. Iveco is convinced that its fuel consumption will be so good that it easily offsets the cost of using far more AdBlue than any of its rivals.
Euro-6 Cursor engines will be used in the next generation of Stralis trucks, due to be unveiled in June.
