UK roads are covered by some form of repair and maintenance (R&M) contract and that the proportion for new trucks is even higher, at about 60%. It is easy to see why R&M contracts enjoy such huge market penetration these days, as operators ditch the overhead of an in-house workshop in favour of a fixed monthly bill that takes care of their maintenance expenditure. But is it really that simple? Should the contract cover just scheduled work or include repairs as well? How long should the contract run? Is the vehicle manufacturer’s R&M contract the smart choice or just the lazy one – can independent providers offer better value for money?
