MERSEYSIDE County Council has identified five possible locations for new road/rail freight interchange facilities following an initiative by a joint working party formed by British Rail and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities.
The working party is studying the potential for a new nationwide system for of such interchanges. It feels the rail network could play a greater role in the growing volume of freight movement if it concentrated on routes where it could compete with road.
The possible locations are near the Containerbase at Aintree, Langton Dock goods sidings, Speke sidings, which is partly in the Liverpool Enterprise Zone, Lea Green, St Helens and Vulcan Village, St Helens.
Private investment will be sought for the facilities, which will be a development of British Rail's Speedlink service but with the emphasis on final stage distribution by road.
